ISBI 2024 Satellite Event

19 Jun 2024

We are thrilled to share the success of the satellite event “Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine: Education, Research, Innovation” which was held within the framework of the 21st IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI 2024). The event brought together a diverse group of students, faculty members, and industry leaders to explore opportunities and challenges at the exciting interface of engineering and life sciences.

Dr. Konstantina Nikita (NTUA) delivered a thought-provoking address outlining the TEAM program’s vision towards the education of future engineers with a holistic understanding of both engineering principles and medical needs. Dr. Elisa E. Konofagou (Columbia University) and Dr. Andrew F. Laine (Columbia University) shared their innovative research on deep learning theory and applications in medical imaging and presented related internship opportunities at Columbia University’s research labs. Dr. Ipatia Doussis-Anagnostopoulou (University of Athens) and Dr. Spyretta Golemati (University of Athens) presented the rationale for designing the program’s courses aiming to provide (i) engineers with basic human anatomy and physiology knowledge and (ii) students with non-engineering backgrounds with the knowledge required to critically evaluate and use technologies in healthcare and medicine. Current TEAM students, Katerina Afentouli and Konstantinos Tziavaras shared their internship experiences at Columbia University, while Thodoris Spiliotis presented his experience with innovation and entrepreneurship focusing on engineering solutions in mental health.

The second day of the satellite event featured a session on innovation and entrepreneurship, with Dr. Leonidas Alexopoulos (NTUA), Vassilis Papakonstantinou (Blue Dome Capital) and TEAM students showcasing the program’s emphasis on translating scientific discoveries into real-world healthcare solutions.

This two-day event served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and inspiration. It solidified the TEAM program’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of translational engineers – a group poised to bridge the gap between engineering advancements and improved healthcare.

smarty4covid - BIOSIM joins forces with AHEPA and launches the first clinical pilot involving hospitalized COVID-19 patients with the aim to identify novel biomarkers of infection and disease progression

06 Dec 2021

Smarty4covid aspires to discover novel biomarkers with high prognostic value regarding the onset and the progress of COVID-19. Τhe project advances the current state of the art by initiating innovative clinical pilots involving hospitalized patients with COVID-19 through a strategic partnership with the AHEPA Hospital. It is expected that the application of AI on the heterogeneous data (e.g. medical history, laboratory exams, audio recordings of breath, speech and cough) that will be collected within the framework of the clinical pilots will produce new biomarkers of disease progression.

Besides the version used within the clinical study under the supervision of healthcare professionals, smarty4covid has released a web-based application (www.smarty4covid.org) to facilitate crowd sourcing data collection. This parallel study aims at the development of models able to predict the risk of COVID-19 infection and provide biomarkers for disease progression in infected non-hospitalized individuals.

Co-ordinated by Konstantina Nikita, MD, PhD (ECE-NTUA Professor and Director of the BIOSIM lab), and featuring collaboration with AILS lab (Prof. George Stamou), smarty4covid has achieved the highest ranking in the call “Interventions to address the economic and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic” and is funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. Dr. Konstantia Zarkogianni, permanent teaching laboratory staff and member of the BIOSIM lab, serves as Principal Investigator of the project which is implemented with the participation of several researchers from the BIOSIM and AILS labs.

MoU between Columbia University and the National Technical University of Athens

19 Nov 2021

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Columbia University (CU) and the National Technical University of Athens for dual degree was officially signed on Wednesday, November 10th, 2021. The signing ceremony was held online, in the presence of delegations consisted of representatives from the administrations and the Schools from both sides. The momentum was signed by Professor Andreas G. Boudouvis, Rector of NTUA, and Professor Mary C. Boyce, Provost of Columbia University.

CU and NTUA agree to establish a dual degree program which, upon successful completion, leads to the awarding of two degrees: the postgraduate degree in various engineering disciplines from CU and the diploma (integrated Master) in various disciplines from NTUA. For students starting enrollment at NTUA, the program is expected to take 10 semesters for completion, including 8 semesters at NTUA and 2 semesters at Columbia. For students starting enrollment at CU (MS degree), the program is expected to take 4 semesters for completion, including 2 semesters at Columbia and 2 semesters at NTUA.

The Deans of the Schools from NTUA will organize the cooperation with the corresponding Schools in the CU toward compiling a course program for the students of NTUA who will study in the CU, which will meet the requirements in terms of prerequisites and credit units.

The implementation of the double degree program will start on a pilot basis, with a small number of students, who will be selected based on their academic performance. Covering the total cost of studies (tuition and living cost) will require multiple source funding.

The NTUA Rector A. Boudouvis emphasizes: “This collaboration is the first between a Greek University and a US University, which concerns a double degree for undergraduate students. Considering that CU is among the most distinguished universities worldwide, this agreement highlights the international reputation of our university and strengthens the status of the degrees of our students. In addition, this collaboration offers our best students the opportunity to get acquainted with study conditions and academic environment characterized by multiple cultures, extroversion, diversity, multidimensional campus life, creativity, leadership in education and research, working by joining forces through team work but, in the same time, with a lot of space for individual achievements and seeking opportunities in multiple directions. NTUA dares to respond to the challenge of reciprocity upon this agreement, by rapidly strengthening the internationalization of the studies, which, in any case, is dictated by its position on the European academic map.”
